Okay, I need help, here's the deal. I'm in a new house and have to figure out my speakers once again. I have too many options, too many speakers and too many amps. But... my main setup is this: JBL 2226 in a 3.5' vented box (2 x 3" ports, about 6" long. One sound absorbing panel behind speaker and one vent at least mostly plugged w/a wash cloth (which my wife wants back at some point), and on top an Edgar horn with a GPA 902 driver. The crossover is from Spekerman57 and, I think 1600 hz. the woofer is 16 ohms and the tweeter is 8. In my room I'm getting harsh sounding piano, especially around 900 to 1200 or a bit higher? hz. The bass is pretty good, boomy with some amps, but generally better than I thought. The room has a deep window seat between the speakers (7' wide and 4' deep), and the sound stage is compressed in the middle. Overall the room is about 15' wide and 18' deep. Any thoughts on getting the harsh notes under control? Is it room treatment or crossover? Ron could chime in about crossover components if he sees this. As an alternative, I've tried a 1k crossover with open baffle on top, crossover is 1st order both top and bottom, top speakers are Fostex FE167E's (97db same as woofer). The top has to be padded down a bit (due to 3db gain in OB and 16 ohm JBLs). This gives a better sound stage, but still a bit harsh. I could switch it all around and put the speakers on the long wall, and my listening position up against the back wall, but not sure if that would help (though it would get rid of the window seat).
