The difference you hear is mostly that of a folded horn versus a direct radiator, and the horn is a lot cleaner. Part of that is from the lessened excursion requirement, part is from the lessened Doppler distortion. All drivers create Doppler, but a folded horn's natural low pass function attenuates the Doppler induced frequencies before they exit the horn. The downside is that you can't get a folded horn from 2 cu ft, but anything under 4 cu ft isn't all that bad. One of the reasons that car subs in general don't sound very good is that they try to get too much from too small a box, but it is a car, after all, not a livingroom.
